Designing a Bitmapped Typeface
Role: Designer, Researcher, Presenter | Timeline: Sep 2024 - Oct 2024 | Tools/Skills: Illustrator, InDesign, Fontstruct, Typeface Ananomy
Project Description: This project explores the full creative process of designing a custom bitmapped typeface, broken into three key phases: Research & Preparation, Sketching & Design, and Application. Stepping into the role of a typographer, I navigated the journey from initial concept to final typeface, gaining a deeper understanding of the anatomy of type and the critical relationships between individual letterforms. Through detailed research and iterative sketching, I developed a typeface tailored for bitmap rendering, with careful attention to subtlety, structure, and pixel-based constraints. This hands-on experience sharpened my typographic skills and reinforced the importance of precision and cohesion in type design. The final output reflects not only a functional and stylistically consistent typeface but also the professionalism and detail-oriented thinking required in high-quality design work.
What I've Learned
• Developed a deep understanding of typographic anatomy, including how individual letterforms interact and maintain consistency within a typeface system.
• Improved ability to think like a typographer, considering technical, aesthetic, and functional aspects of type creation.
• Strengthened visual communication skills, translating research and creative exploration into a cohesive and functional design outcome.
• Reinforced design discipline and workflow, managing a multi-phase project with consistent documentation and creative iteration.
