Typography, Motion, & Voice
Role: Designer, Researcher, Presenter | Timeline: April 2024 - May 2024 | Tools/Skills: Photoshop, InDesign, Active Feedbacks
Project Description: This project explores the relationship between sound and typography through a visual interpretation of a spoken-word poem from Ken Nordine’s Colors. By transcribing the poem and analyzing its rhythm, tone, and pacing, I designed an accordion-fold book that uses only one color and expressive typography to reflect the audio’s mood and tempo. The result is a multi-page experience that treats type as voice, emphasizing timing, texture, and space to create a visual rhythm that mirrors the spoken performance.
Learning Outcomes
• Developed a deeper understanding of typography as an expressive, voice-like medium.
• Gained experience translating audio rhythm and tone into visual form.
• Improved skills in layout design, including page sequencing, pacing, and spatial composition.
• Practiced designing within strict limitations (one color, no imagery) to focus on typographic form.
• Strengthened sensitivity to how visual rhythm influences reader experience and interpretation.
